The E-Commerce SEO Checklist for Product and Collection Pages
A practical checklist to optimise product pages, collection pages and technical SEO so your store earns more organic traffic and sales.

Organic search is one of the most profitable channels for an e-commerce store, because you don't pay for each click. But stores are hard to optimise: thousands of URLs, thin product descriptions and filters that create duplicate pages. Use this checklist to cover the essentials.
Technical foundations
- Indexing: check Google Search Console for pages that are "Discovered — currently not indexed" or "Crawled — currently not indexed".
- Canonical tags: make sure product variants and filtered collection URLs point to the right canonical page.
- Site speed: compress images, limit apps and scripts, and monitor Core Web Vitals.
- XML sitemap: submitted and only including indexable pages.
- Structured data: Product schema with price, availability and review data where you have genuine reviews.
- HTTPS and redirects: no redirect chains, and all old URLs 301-redirected after migrations.
- Mobile usability: most shoppers browse on phones; test every template on a small screen.
Collection (category) pages
Collection pages are often your best SEO opportunity because they match broad buying searches like "women's running shoes".
- Target one primary keyword per collection.
- Write a unique, helpful introduction (and optionally a longer guide lower on the page).
- Use a descriptive H1 and title tag.
- Add internal links to related collections and buying guides.
- Avoid letting every filter combination get indexed.
Product pages
- Write unique descriptions — never just copy the manufacturer's text.
- Include materials, sizes, use cases and care instructions.
- Use descriptive image file names and alt text.
- Add FAQs answering real customer questions.
- Show genuine reviews.
- Handle out-of-stock products carefully: keep the page live if it's coming back, redirect it if it's gone for good.
Content that supports buying
Buying guides, comparisons and "how to choose" articles capture people earlier in the journey and pass authority to your product pages through internal links.
Internal linking
Link from your homepage and navigation to your most important collections, from blog posts to relevant products, and between related products. Internal links help Google understand which pages matter most.
International SEO
If you sell in several countries, use hreflang tags, localised currency and spelling, and country-specific content where needs differ.
Earn authority
Good links still matter. Digital PR, product reviews from real publications, partnerships and genuinely useful content earn links naturally. Avoid buying links from spammy networks — it's a risk to your whole domain.
Measure progress
Track impressions, clicks and average position in Search Console, and organic revenue in GA4. SEO compounds slowly, so look at trends over months, not days.
